In recent events, Crimea has asked to join Russia. Chrimea has been known to be ethnically Russian and the protests in Ukraine has divided the nation immensely. Crimea may be able to vote on a referendum on March 16th. Crimea has been known to support the Russian president Vladimir Putin.
This has a lot of implications on the World War I idea of national self-determination and how nations are made. The winners are usually the ones who get to decide what nations get to have their own nation. The ghosts of WWI are surfacing again in 2014. What would the implications of having a smaller Ukraine nation be? Will the ever fragmented Eastern Europe find it's identity.
